Help Documentation

Why can't I modify files that have been shared with read-only permission? What can I do?

With Zoho Docs Sync enabled, all of the files in your Zoho Docs account will be available on your computer. (If you have enabled selective syncing, only those files that you have chosen to sync will be transferred to your desktop folder.) All files that have been shared with you can be found under Zoho Docs > Shared with Me.

When a file is shared with you, the file owner will choose which access permissions to enable for your account. Read-only allows you to view but not change the document. Although you can edit, rename, move, or delete read-only files in your sync folder, these changes and actions will not be synced back to the web. When you try to upload a read-only file to which you have made changes, one of the following error messages will appear:

Edit error

You can't make changes to this file, because it was shared as read-only. To save the changes you just made, you can move the edited copy to one of your personal folders.

Rename error

You can't rename this file, because it was shared as read-only. Click Learn more to know why.

Delete error

You can't delete this file, because it was shared as read-only. You can download and restore the missing file in the original location.

To edit a read-only document, you'll need to ask the document owner for Read/Write permissions.
