How do I upload and modify files/sub-folders in a read-only folder?

When you install Zoho Docs Sync on your desktop, all the files and folders in your Zoho Docs account will be downloaded to your computer. (If you have enabled selective syncing, only these files and folders that you have chosen to sync will be transferred to to your desktop folder.) All files and folders that have been shared with you can be found in Zoho Docs > Shared with Me.

There are different permission levels that are associated with a shared folder in your Zoho Docs account. These levels are defined by the owner of the folder at the time of sharing. Read-only permissions limit your access to only being able to view the files in the folder. Although you can create, edit, rename, move, or delete files and sub-folders in the shared folder, these actions will not be synced to the web. When you try to upload files that you've made changes to, one of the following error messages will appear:

Delete error

You can't delete this file because you have a read-only permission level. You can download and restore the missing file in the original location.

To delete files, please ask the owner of the folder to change the permission level to read-write.

Move/Rename error

You can't move or rename this file because you have a read-only permission level.

To move or rename files, you can ask the owner of the folder to change the permission level to read-write.

Upload error

You can't upload files/folders in this folder, because you have a read-only permission level. You may move the file from its current location and upload it in another folder.

To upload read-only files and sub-folders, do one of the following:

  1. Ask the owner of the folder to change the permission level to read-write.
  2. Upload the file(s)/sub-folder(s) to your personal folder, then share with the appropriate users.

Edit error

You can't make changes to this file, because the file has a read-only permission level. To save the changes you just made, you can move the edited copy to one of your personal folders.

To edit read-only files, please ask the owner of the folder to change the permission level to read-write.

Folder error

You can't create new folders, rename or move any folders because you have read-only permission level. You can save the newly created or renamed folder by moving it to another folder.

To create, rename and move folders, ask the owner of the folder to change the permission level to read-write.
