Working with Images, Shapes and Other Objects

Compelling documents require more than just words. Enhance your work with shapes, text boxes, symbols, links or equations. In Zoho Writer, you can insert non-text elements to better illustrate your point or catch your reader's eye.

How do I add shapes?

Shapes can help you make diagrams, charts or sketches.

To add shapes:

  • 1Click the More Options
    icon in the top-left corner of the document window.
  • 2Go to the Insert tab.
  • 3Under Pictures & Tables, click Shapes.
  • 4Select the shape you want from the list. You can create shapes by selecting the Custom Shapes option from the list.
  • 5Click where you want to insert the shape. Drag the cursor and adjust the size. Let go when you're done.

How do I use the text box?

A text box can be used to provide bits of information, like a note or a tip.

To insert a text box:

  • 1Click the More Options
    icon in the top-left corner of the document window.
  • 2Go to the Insert tab.
  • 3Under Pictures & Tables, click Text Box.
  • 4Click where you want to insert the text box. Drag the cursor and adjust the size. Let go when you're done.

How do I insert equation?

Equations will be helpful if you're working on an academic paper.

To insert equations:

  • 1Click the More Options
    icon in the top-left corner of the document window. A pop-out menu will appear.
  • 2Go to the Insert tab.
  • 3Under Pictures & Tables, click Equation. Awindow will appear..
  • 4Scroll through the Symbols/Functions list and select the symbol your need. The corresponding syntax will be displayed in the Latex Syntax box.
  • 5You can check the symbols in the preview space and click >Insert to add it to your document.

How do I insert symbols?

There are many symbols used in the sciences which you cannot input from the keyboard. That is why we have a symbol-set ready for you.

To insert symbols:

  • 1Click the More Options
    icon in the top-left corner of the screen.
  • 2Go to the Insert tab.
  • 3Under Pictures & Tables, click Symbol.
  • 4Use the Categories tab to change categories and select the symbol you want to insert.
  • 5Click Insert. The symbol will be inserted.

Note: If you know a symbol's unicode, you can enter it in the Character Code tab.

How do I insert a blank page?

If you need to fit in a page of content between two pages, which are already done, you can use the insert blank page option.

To insert blank page:

  • 1Click where you want to insert the blank page.
  • 2Click the More Options
    icon in the top-left corner of the document window.
  • 3Go to the Insert tab.
  • 4Click Blank Page under Sections & Pages. A blank page will be inserted.

How do I insert a page break?

If you want to end a topic in a page and start the next one in the following page, use a page break.

To insert page break:

  • 1Click where you want to insert the page break.
  • 2Click the More Options
    icon in the top-left corner of the document window.
  • 3Go to the Insert tab.
  • 4Click Page Break under Sections & Pages. A page break will be inserted.

How do I insert the current date and time in a document?

If you want to display the current date and time in a print out, this option can prove useful.

To insert current date and time:

  • 1Click where you want the date and time to appear.
  • 2Click the More Options
    icon in the top-left side of the screen.
  • 3Go to the Insert tab.
  • 4Click Date under Autofields. A list of date and time formats will appear.
  • 5Select the date and time format. The date and time will be displayed.

How do I open the Quick Insert menu?

The Quick Insert menu lets you add images, tables, links, bookmarks and comments as you type without having to open the left-hand Options Menu. To open the Quick Insert menu, just type the @ symbol. The Quick Insert menu will immediately appear in the form of a drop-down list. You can also click the
icon located to the left of the text you're working on.

How do I insert images?

You can insert images from your desktop, images library, using URLs or directly from the web.

From your desktop

If you think you have an image in your gallery that fits the context of your content, you can use this option.

To insert images from your desktop:

  • 1Click the More Options
    icon in the top-left corner of the screen.
  • 2In the tool panel that appears, open the Insert tab.
  • 3Under Pictures & Tables, click Image. A window will appear.
  • 4Drag and drop the image you want to upload.
  • 5Alternatively, you can click Choose an image to upload. Your local files directory will appear. Select the image you want to upload and click Open. The image will be inserted in your document.

From image library

Once you upload images in Zoho Writer, they will be stored in the image library.

To insert images from library:

  • 1Click the More Options
    icon in the top left corner of the screen.
  • 2Go to the Insert tab.
  • 3Under Pictures & Tables, click Image. A window will appear.
  • 4Click My Library in the left panel. The image library will be displayed.
  • 5Select the image you want to use and click Insert. The image will be uploaded.

Using URLs

If your colleague has shared the URL of a picture and you want to upload it, you can use this option.

  • 1Click the More Options
    icon in the top-left corner of the screen.
  • 2Go to the Insert tab.
  • 3Under Pictures & Tables, click Image. A window will appear.
  • 4Click From URL in the left panel.
  • 5Enter the URL of the image and click Insert. The picture will be inserted.

Directly from the web

You can browse directly from within Zoho Writer and insert images in your documents.

To insert images directly from the web:

  • 1Click the More Options
    icon in the top-left corner.
  • 2Go to the Insert tab.
  • 3Under Pictures & Tables, click Image. A window will appear.
  • 4Click Web Search in the left panel. A web search tab will appear.
  • 5Search for images using the search tab.
  • 6Select the image you want to insert and click Insert. The image will be uploaded.

From Picasa

If you have images stored in Picasa, you can easily upload them in Zoho Writer.

To insert images from Picasa:

  • 1Click the More Options
    icon in the top-left corner.
  • 2Go to the Insert tab.
  • 3Under Pictures & Tables , click Image. A window will appear.
  • 4Click Picasa in the left panel. An Authenticate Google button will appear.
  • 5Click Authenticate Google and log in with your credentials. Zoho Corp will request permission for accessing your images. Click Allow to proceed.
  • 6The images in your Picasa account will be displayed. To insert any image, select it and click Open.

How do I insert videos?

You can directly upload videos from YouTube and use them in your documents.

To insert videos:

  • 1Click the more options
    icon in the top-left corner of the document window.
  • 2Go to the Insert tab.
  • 3Under Pictures & Tables, click Videos.
  • 4Use the search tab to search for videos.
  • 5Click Insert. The video will be inserted.

How do I create a Pull Quote?

Make distinct excerpts of your content stand out and visually appealing, with Pull Quotes.

To create a Pull Quote:

  • 1Select the piece of content you wish to Pull Quote.
  • 2Click on the more options icon at the top left corner of the screen. And, click on the Insert tab.
  • 3Under Pictures and Tables, click on Text Box. A list of Pull Quote templates will be displayed.
  • 4Choose one of them to Pull Quote the selected piece of content.

How do I change text position and wrap text inside Text Box?

Managing text alignment inside a Text Box is quite easy.

  • 1Once you've inserted the Text Box, the 'Shape Properties' window will open up.
  • 2Under the header Texts, click on Wrap Type.
  • 3Two options will be listed. 1. Square. 2. In front of the text.
  • 4Select square if you want the text inside to remain as it is.
  • 5"In front of the text" is mostly used when you use images inside the Text Box space. In that case, the text below will warp itself over the image.
